When my husband's grandmother passed away, he inherited all of her furniture, but we had no place in our small home for any of it. We had been married for years and had already purchased all of our own furniture. We thought of selling his grandmother's things, but some of them were heirlooms that my husband fondly remembered from visiting her during his childhood and he preferred to keep them in the family. We agreed that we would sell most of the furniture and save those special pieces of his grandmother's furniture to give to our own daughter when she was old enough to move out on her own. However, we still had the problem of where we could keep those items for the next ten or more years.I found out that it would be best to store all of the furniture in a unit that had a controlled climate because many of them were made of fine wood that might crack or damaged in other ways by the extreme cold of our winters. The manager of one storage facility was particularly helpful. He helped me decide the best storage unit size for our needs and reminded me that I need to insure the contents of the storage unit just in case something ever happened to it. He also said that his facility dealt with a nearby moving company and we would be able to get a discount on having someone pack up the furniture, take it to the storage facility, and unload it into the self storage unit if we rented one there.
Over the years, we checked on the furniture in the self storage unit and it maintained its good condition. When our daughter got married, we hired the same moving company and they took everything from the self storage unit to her new home. The furniture looked beautiful and I was thankful that our friend had suggested placing it all in a nearby self storage unit.
