Although it might seem ideal to store the recommended things in an attic, basement, shed, or garage, so that they are easily accesses, it must be remembered that those areas are also part of the home and will be looked at by any potential buyers. Instead of cluttering up a different area of the property, it is best if the excess items be boxed up and placed in a self storage unit until after the house is sold. The self storage unit can either be located close to the original home or close to the one that the family will be moving into when their original home sells. It is most likely that the items will not return to the original home unless the family ends up changing their minds about moving away.
Since there is no way to know how long it will take to sell the original home, it is likely that the contents of each box will not be remembered when it is time to unpack them. Therefore, it is important that each box be labeled on several sides so that the label can be read no matter how things are stacked up in the self storage unit. Heavier boxes should be stacked on the bottom so that they do not crush the boxes beneath them and cause them to tear and dump their contents on the floor of the storage unit when they are picked up or moved.
