That is why it is important that they be properly stored if the family does not have the space in their home or they need to move the furniture out while they are carpeting, painting, or in some other way redecorating their home. Simply placing these types of furniture in a garage or in a self storage unit is not enough to protect them. They need to be put somewhere that has a regulated climate so that they are in the same condition when the family decides that they are ready to return them to their living space.

Many self storage facilities offer special storage units where the climate is controlled. They have heat and air conditioning so that the temperature does not fluctuate drastically and the humidity level is often kept nearly constant by the use of a dehumidifier. It is best to ask the manager or one of the other staff members what type of climate controlled storage units they have and the sizes that they offer so that there is room for these furniture items and anything else that they need to store.

Aside from placing wood and leather furniture items in a climate controlled self storage unit, it is advisable to also clean and treat these types of furniture so that they will maintain their quality while they are being stored. A soft white cloth can be used to spread furniture polish on all of the wooden furniture, but the furniture polish is completely dry before the pieces of furniture are stored away. The leather furniture should be professionally cleaned and conditioned. Once again, the furniture should be completely dry before it is moved into the self storage unit.

As a final protection for wood and leather furniture that is being stored, the owner should cover the furniture with either canvas tarps or cotton drop cloths to keep off the dust that naturally accumulates no matter where the furniture is placed. These two types of covering material are the best for use in storage units because they allow ample ventilation to the furniture while still keeping the dust off. It is important that the furniture covers do not touch the floor so there is no chance of any liquids winking up the covers and reaching the furniture and causing damage.
