As a further convenience to their customers, many self storage facilities will sell something called a moving kit or moving box kit. Basically this is a collection of various sizes of cardboard boxes that are normally needed for certain types of storage. For example, a family that needs boxes to temporarily store everything from a three bedroom house would request a kit that is put together based on what is usually in that size house. Some of the boxes in the kit may be specific for the protection of certain items such as a dish barrel for breakable place settings. In addition to the various box sizes, these kits also include other basic items that are needed when placing possessions in a self storage unit. These can include things such as packing tape, bubble wrap, foam liners, and even a permanent marker to label the boxes.
If the family finds that they did not use all of the boxes, they can often return the unused ones to the self storage manager and receive a refund for the cost of just those boxes. The manager will simply return the cardboard boxes to their supply and sell them to another customer that needs that type of box.
